Whenever I am over in the northern Lake District, I usually look in on this location. Located on a low hill with the land falling away on all sides it has a 360° panorama of the mountains of this part of Cumbria. The sense of mystery is always present at this location no matter how many visitors are there.
However
on this particular October morning I was alone. It was the first frost of
the year on the grass, and the valley leading to St John’s in the
Vale was filled with mist made luminous as the sun rose. This was one of
the first photographs I made with a 5”x4” view camera.
